Rapid recovery hip and knee replacement surgery

Direct Anterior Approach for hip replacement
Dr Zywiel is fellowship-trained in the direct anterior approach and uses it for hip replacement surgery. With this technique, surgery is performed from the front of the hip where the joint is closer to the surface of the skin. The direct anterior approach allows Dr Zywiel to perform the operation by going between major muscles, without the need to detach important muscle groups from bone. This technique has been shown to provide faster early recovery after hip replacement in many patients.
An additional advantage is that the procedure can be performed with the patient laying on their back, allowing the use of low-dose xray during surgery to ensure that optimal component size, position and leg lengths are achieved for each patient.

Outpatient/Same Day joint replacement
Working together with a team of anesthetists, nurses, physical therapists and physician assistants, Dr Zywiel developed the Toronto Western Hospital’s same day discharge joint replacement program. This allows patients to leave hospital and start recovering within hours of their hip or knee replacement, while having professional support available before and after surgery.
Ideal candidates for same day discharge surgery are motivated, medically well, and have someone at home with them. For these patients, early discharge home provides excellent functional results and high levels of satisfaction with care.
