Education and Training

After completing his medical studies, Dr Zywiel completed a two-year research fellowship in Clinical Orthopaedics in Baltimore, Maryland. He then returned to Toronto for residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Toronto.

While a resident, he completed a Masters in Health Policy, Management and Evaluation through the Surgeon Scientist Program at the University of Toronto.

After completing his orthopaedic residency, he then returned to the United States as the inaugural Miles Abell Fellow in Arthroplasty and Value-Based Health Care Delivery at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin.

He once again returned to his home town of Toronto, completing a second fellowship in Lower Extremity Reconstruction and Trauma at St Michael’s Hospital, before joining the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Health Network/Toronto Western Hospital.

His clinical practice is focused on hip and knee replacement surgery, including both primary and revision (re-do) procedures. He is one of few surgeons in the region with specific fellowship training in the Direct Anterior Approach for both primary and revision surgery.

 
 

Academic Affiliations

Dr Zywiel has a full time appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. In addition, he has a faculty appointment in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.
